Chicago, IL: An Ethel Travel Guide

1. Recommend a hotel/motel in your town/city:

Fairmont Chicago is my staycation go-to, as it’s right in the downtown Loop. It’s steps away from the Art Institute, the Chicago Symphony and tons of restaurants and shops. I’ve also really enjoyed staying at The Swissotel (especially for the holidays, when it’s truly decked out) and the Peninsula (whose rooftop pool can’t be beaten).

2. Recommend a restaurant in your town/city:

Chicago is for sure a foodie city. If you’re a first-timer and want to get a little taste of everything, then head over to Time Out Market Chicago, which I believe is the best food market in the Windy City, as it’s got super trendy restaurants you won’t be able to get into elsewhere on short notice, including Rose Mary, Gaijin and Urbanbelly. Got more time? Make sure to check out Dearly Beloved, which has the best cocktail list I’ve ever seen - and also Barrio Chicago, which is a really fun modern Mexican spot.

3. What's a must-see in your town/city?

You can’t come to Chicago without checking out Museum Campus, which contains the Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and beautiful views of the city (you’ll often find couples taking wedding photos here). My personal favorite thing to do is to swing by the Lincoln Park Zoo (totally free), then wander over to Clark Street for miles of shops, restaurants and more.

4. What makes your town/city fun for tourists?

It’s such an easy city to visit, thanks to the El train and lots of walkable areas. During the summer, Chicago hosts a plethora of festivals, ranging from Taste of Randolph to the Chicago Blues Festival to Rib Fest. Most charge a minimal price to enter, which includes access to the bands and plenty of food (the food and drinks are extra).

5. What should you avoid when visiting your town/city?

You should avoid the winters at all costs unless you’re seriously into frigid temps and tons of snow. Also, and this may be an unpopular opinion, I would avoid Navy Pier. Sure, it’s a top tourist spot, but you’ll never see locals there, as it’s packed, filled with souvenir shops and gets ridiculously crowded. Navy Pier does have an incredible children’s museum, however, and that’s the only reason I make the trek occasionally.
